Welcome To The Circus!

There were times the Napa Auto Parts 200 looked more like a circus than a race -- cars were spinning everywhere!

The race was such a comedy show, I wouldn't know where to begin on my comments.  See the highlights here.

Why Mark Martin has never won a Sprint Cup

Mark Martin is a wuss or just way too nice. If the roles were reversed I am almost 100% positive that Kyle Busch would have bumped or shoved Mark out of the way to win the race. I was very disappointed with the finish.

I was going to post about last night's race, but upon reading Jerry's blog post, I thought he took the words right out of my mouth. So, please click on the link below to read Jerry's post about last night's race.

The Intimidator 305 At Kings Dominion

Press Release

Doswell, VA. – The most exciting ride in Kings Dominion’s 35-year history will debut in the spring of 2010, as the amusement park introduces a mammoth 5,100-foot long steel Giga-coaster. Intimidator 305 takes its name from one of stock car racing’s most beloved and tenacious drivers, Dale Earnhardt, “the Intimidator™” along with the height of the coaster’s lift hill, 305 feet.

Intimidator 305, only the second Giga-coaster ever built in North America, will be the tallest and fastest roller coaster of its type on the East Coast. The lift hill will stand a towering 305 feet at its highest peak; descend 300 feet at an 85 degree-angle and thunder along the track at speeds in excess of 90 miles per hour during its three minute race to the finish. The trains, fashioned after Dale Earnhardt’s signature black car, will roar through six airtime humps plus three high-speed turns and the experience will have guests screaming for another lap around the track.

“Intimidator 305 will break records as the single largest capital investment in the history of Kings Dominion,” said Pat Jones, Kings Dominion’s vice president and general manager. “The numbers speak for themselves, at a cost of $25 million, a lift hill and first drop close to the height of the park’s landmark Eiffel Tower; you’ll have to see it to believe it.” Intimidator 305 will be located in the park’s Congo section and becomes Kings Dominion’s 15th world-class roller coaster.

Dale Earnhardt, Inc. will partner with Cedar Fair Entertainment Company, owner of Kings Dominion, to bring the massive coaster to life. “We’re excited to see this new roller coaster celebrate the speed and intensity of the legendary career of Dale Earnhardt,” said Jeff Steiner, executive vice president and general manager of Dale Earnhardt, Inc. “There are millions of fans that still honor their racing hero and this is a very real way for them to connect with the spirit and passion of the Intimidator™.”

Guests will have the opportunity to see the ride being built from the ground up during the remainder of the park’s 2009 season, as well as follow its progress by watching the online webcam, set up to overlook the entire work site. Those who cannot wait until 2010 may take a virtual ride on Intimidator 305, access exclusive updates, features, virtual renderings, ride statistics, and more at www.intimidator305.com.

Intamin AG of Wollerau, Switzerland, a recognized industry leader in roller coaster development, designed Intimidator 305. The ride is scheduled to open in the spring of 2010.

Keselowski to race Cup for Penske Racing in 2010

About the time Keselowski was winning the pole for Friday's Food City 250 Nationwide race at Bristol Motor Speedway, reports were swirling that Keselowski had agreed in principle to drive the No. 12 Dodge for Penske Racing next season. According to two published reports and additional sources, Keselowski is to replace David Stremme as driver of the car.

After winning the pole Friday, a grinning Keselowski was coy when asked about the reports.

"Ah, well, you know, I'm really not in a position to talk about any of that stuff right now. That's probably my biggest response. And I'm really not prepared to address any of the rumors about next year right now. I'm here to race the Nationwide car and I'm not going to let anything get in the way of that or distract me from that," Keselowski said.

Asked if he was still a free agent, Keselowski smiled widely and added: "Everybody's free. We live in a free country, so, yeah, I'm still free." Read the entire story here.

My cats saw more of the race than I did

Yep, I passed out cold by 3PM and didn't wake up until the race was over. My body shut down and said "no watching the race for you today."

I did see that Junior finished in 3rd place and I am happy for the entire team.

"Well, I don't want to get too excited," said Earnhardt, who won his last Cup race at Michigan in June 2008. "You want to be up front every week like this. You want to be there the whole race. You don't want to just come up there through the last 50 laps and surprise everybody.

"But we're getting better as a team. It's just really, really hard to be patient and be mindful and respectful of everybody and hold your tongue every once in a while.

"But we're working really hard. I've never worked so hard to run third. I've won races working a whole lot easier than this. But it's competitive with this car, and there's not really a real edge for anyone right now."

Way To Go Brad!

Carl Edwards has a nasty crash with Trevor Bayne. See the video here.

It was Brian Vickers and Kyle Busch all afternoon in Michigan but when those two were battling for the victory on the final lap, Brad Keselowski came on the outside, passing both for the win. Afterward, Busch and Vickers had words for each other. View the final laps of the race here.

Post-race Video: Kyle Busch vs. Brian Vickers

I don't like either of them, but I just loved Brian's comments about Kyle.

I'm sure there will be a group discussion with Mr. Helton very soon. LOL!

Earnhardt: NASCAR Falling Flat, Car Needs Tweaks

CHRIS JENKINS (AP)

BROOKLYN, Mich. - Dale Earnhardt Jr. says NASCAR's brand of on-track action has fallen flat lately, and the sport's most popular driver believes changes to Sprint Cup's new car are needed to spice things up.

Speaking before Friday's practice at Michigan International Speedway, Earnhardt said NASCAR needs an injection of excitement to entice fans and sponsors to pay attention — even in good economic times, but especially when things are bad.

"We're not really where we want to be, I don't think, as a sport," Earnhardt said. "We need to do things to excite corporate America, excite the fans. And we need to be proactive immediately, because we haven't."

The Car of Tomorrow, or CoT, made its debut in a handful of races in 2007 and was used full-time in 2008. It was designed to save teams money and improve safety.

And while it's generally considered a success on those fronts, there have been widespread complaints from drivers that the new car just doesn't put on as good a show on the track.

Those criticisms seemed to have died down recently — until one of the sport's biggest stars spoke out Friday. Read the rest of the story here.

Another BIG reason why I hate the Eagles

Vick will make $1.6 million for the first year of the deal. The Eagles have an option on the second year for $5.2 million.

The deal was reached Tuesday, but wasn't finalized until Thursday.

Several head coaches have told FOXSports.com that they would love to have signed Vick but were unable to because of trepidation on the part of their owners.

Vick makes sense for the Eagles as a second QB option if Donovan McNabb goes down with an injury.

Jeffrey Earnhardt Finishes 24th in NNS Debut at Watkins Glen Int'l

Thanks to Jessica Trippy for this!

In his NASCAR Nationwide Series debut, Jeffrey Earnhardt, the fourth-generation driver from the legendary Earnhardt family, brought home a solid 24th place finish at Saturday’s race at Watkins Glen International. After a slow start to the weekend, the Key Motorsports team gave Earnhardt a competitive road course car, nearly finishing in the top-20 if not for a last lap spin by a competitor.

With a brand new driver and a brand new road course car, it took time for the Key Motorsports team to get into the swing of things at Watkins Glen International. After posting times outside the top-35 in both practices and qualifying, the team was certain that rookie Jeffrey Earnhardt and the FABGrills.com Chevy would show their true potential after the green flag waved for the Zippo 200 at The Glen.

Starting 36th, Earnhardt was confident that the No. 40 Chevrolet would get faster with every lap, which he quickly proved to be correct. By lap 13 of the 82-lap race, Earnhardt maneuvered his way past the top-30 and never looked back, working his way up to 23rd before the leaders started pitting on lap 17.

Employing a different fuel strategy than many of his competitors, crew chief Gary Showalter chose to take advantage of track position, allowing Earnhardt to wheel the No. 40 up to 10th place by lap 21. When Earnhardt brought the Key Motorsports machine to pit road under yellow on lap 35, he was satisfied with the handling of the car. The Key crew gave him four tires and fuel, sending him back onto the track in 26th place without any adjustments.

When the caution flag waved again less than ten laps later, Showalter called Earnhardt onto pit road for tires and fuel once again, this time electing to adjust on the FABGrills.com Chevy to loosen it up. Returning to the track, Earnhardt took the green flag in 28th, gaining another position by the time the field was shown the yellow again on lap 52.

Now within their fuel mileage window, the team pitted for the final time, taking fuel and making another track bar adjustment to counteract the car’s tight condition. Restarting 29th and prepared to stay on track for the remainder of the race, Earnhardt once again began to improve with every lap, navigating the No. 40 up to 23rd with ten laps to go.

By the final lap, Earnhardt was running 20th and fighting hard for the 19th position, clearly on his way to a top-20 finish. Unfortunately, in the final turns of the race, the No. 34 attempted an over-aggressive pass on Earnhardt, hitting his rear quarter panel and sending the two vehicles spinning. Though the No. 34 headed straight into the wall and received serious damage, Earnhardt was able to right his car and get back on the throttle, losing only 4 positions in the scuffle. Crossing the finish line 24th, both team and driver were pleased by the solid showing.

“We had a little bit of trouble with the handling and the brakes at the start of the weekend, but we worked on the car and kept tuning on it,” said Earnhardt. “All these guys kept working real hard throughout the race to get the car a lot better. I’m so proud of the team, they did a great job and we just got turned there on the last lap. It’s just one of those racing things…it’s the last lap and everyone’s going for whatever spot they can get. At least we brought the car home in one piece. I hate that we couldn’t have gotten the 19th place finish, but I guess 24th isn’t bad. We’ll take that car and go to Montreal and do even better.”

Curtis Key’s No. 40 remains 23rd in the NNS owner standings after Jeffrey Earnhardt’s debut at The Glen. The Key Motorsports Chevrolet is now 273 points ahead of 30th place.

The NASCAR Nationwide Series returns to ovals this Saturday at Michigan International Speedway. Scott Wimmer will resume his role as driver of the No. 40 Chevrolet in this weekend’s CARFAX 250.

It's Monday Racing...again.

Lap 41 -- YELLOW FLAG NO. 3: Dale Earnhardt Jr. lost his brakes in Turn 10 and went flying into the gravel pit. Reed Sorenson in the wrong place at the wrong time and gets collected by Junior. Sorenson able to get started back up and get back on the track.

I give up. I have to run some errands in this heat. Ack! It feels like 107 degrees outside.

Oh did I mention we were without power for almost two hours because of a fire? About 19,000 homes and businesses in northeast Burlington County and Ocean County were without power for over an hour this afternoon due to a fire at a Jersey Central Power & Light substation. Ugh.

I'll listen to the race on satellite as I run my errands.

Update: Well I heard about the wreck on the radio while I was swimming with the dog. When I got home, I saw the video of the Hornish crash and it made me cringe. Holy Moly!

If you didn't see the crash as it happened like me, you can see it here.

Congrats to Tony Stewart on his win today!

Pennsylvania 500 moved to Monday due to weather

A heavy morning shower, coupled with groundwater seepage in Pocono Raceway's asphalt surface, forced NASCAR officials to postpone the Sunoco Red Cross Pennsylvania 500 until Monday at 12:15 p.m. ET with coverage on ESPN beginning at noon ET.

Hornaday wins fifth in a row

Ron Hornaday raced to his fifth consecutive Camping World Truck Series victory, easily holding off Brian Scott in a green-white-checkered finish Saturday night at Nashville Superspeedway.

"Five! Can you believe that?" the 51-year-old Hornaday said.

The five consecutive wins were the first in NASCAR since 1971.

Keselowski wins first series race at Iowa

By Sporting News Wire Service

NEWTON, Iowa -- Brad Keselowski passed Kyle Busch with eight laps remaining and went on to win the inaugural Nationwide Series race at Iowa Speedway.

Busch had pitted for two tires under the race's 10th caution, while Keselowski chose to keep his No. 88 Chevrolet on the track. The race went green on Lap 219 of 250, and Busch needed six laps to pass Keselowski.

But after another caution, Keselowski stormed back to take the lead and earn his second win of the season. And with the victory, Keselowski won an extra $75,000 via Nationwide Insurance's Dash 4 Cash program, honoring full-time Nationwide drivers who win select races, with Iowa being one of the four.

"It sure means a lot to win this race," Keselowski said. "The Dash 4 Cash program that Nationwide has, to be the guy that wins that ... and to be a full-time Nationwide guy that wins it that doesn't run full time in the Cup Series, it kind of feels like you stake a claim for the series by winning that.

"The inaugural race here at Iowa for the Nationwide Series and, really, for NASCAR, and to win here in front of a crowd we had here [Saturday], that's pretty awesome.

"And it was a good race, too. Just everything about [Saturday], I couldn't ask for more. I couldn't ask for a better finish."

Keselowski ended up leading four times for 121 laps.
