Bowyer placed on probation after Dover retaliation

NASCAR has placed Clint Bowyer, driver of the No. 21 car in the Nationwide Series, on probation until June 16 for a rule violation he committed during the race at Dover International Speedway on May 15. Bowyer was found to have violated Section 12-1 (actions detrimental to stock car racing -- aggressive driving) of the 2010 Nationwide Series Rule Book.

On the next-to-last restart at Dover, Denny Hamlin bumped Bowyer out of second place as the green flag waved. The collision triggered a nine-car accident and dropped Bowyer from second to 19th.

After the red flag was lifted, Bowyer drove from pit road and slammed into the side of Hamlin's car under caution, causing it to spin. NASCAR immediately parked Bowyer and sent him to the garage (watch video).

Vickers has blood clots

DOVER, Del. -- Brian Vickers remained in a Washington-area hospital on Friday as doctors worked to dissolve blood clots that had formed in his veins.

Jay Frye, vice president and general manager of Red Bull Racing, said he believed Vickers was on an "intense type dosage" of medication, and wasn't sure when the driver would be released from the hospital or when he might return to the race track. Casey Mears will fill in for Vickers during this weekend's events at Dover International Speedway.

"At this point, we're not even sure when he's going to get out of the hospital, and we had to prepare for the weekend," Frye said. "His health is our No. 1 concern right now. ... This is something that is going to affect our chances of making the Chase. But he's a long-term player with Red Bull Racing, we're a long-term player in the sport, and our main concern is his health. If this affects the Chase, it's nothing we anticipated to happen, wanted to happen, but we've got to do what we've got to do."

No. 38 team penalized for infractions after Darlington

NASCAR has issued penalties to the No. 38 team that competes in the Nationwide Series as a result of rule violations during this past weekend's event at Darlington Raceway.

The No. 38 car was found to be in violation of Sections 12-1 (actions detrimental to stock car racing); 12-4-J (any determination by NASCAR officials that the race equipment used in the event does not conform to NASCAR rules) and 20A-12.3T (unapproved left front shock absorber) of the 2010 Nationwide Series Rule Book. The infractions were discovered during post-race inspection on May 7.

Crew chief Stewart Cooper has been fined $10,000. Team owner Ralph Braun was penalized with the loss of 25 Nationwide Series championship owner points and driver Kasey Kahne was docked 25 Nationwide Series championship driver points.

No. 7 and No. 55 teams penalized after Darlington

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- NASCAR has issued penalties to the No. 7 and No. 55 teams that compete in the Cup Series as a result of rules violations last week at Darlington Raceway.

The No. 7 car was found to be in violation of Sections 12-1 (actions detrimental to stock car racing); 12-4-J (any determination by NASCAR officials that the race equipment used in the event does not conform to NASCAR required specifications); and 20-18A (unapproved additional door braces) of the 2010 NASCAR rule book. The infraction was discovered during opening day inspection on May 7.

Crew chief Samuel Stanley has been fined $25,000 and placed on NASCAR probation until Dec. 31. Robby Gordon, both driver and owner of the No. 7 car, has been penalized with the loss of 25 championship driver and 25 championship owner points.
