All-Star Challenge

I was bored to death. I didn't even watch the last 15 laps or so. The only thing that was exciting was that Kyle Busch didn't win the entire thing.

I really hope the Coca-Cola 600 isn't as boring.

What are your thoughts? Or should I just say, Chey and Rev Jim what are your thoughts since you two are the only ones that leave comments.

Childress inducted into North Carolina Sports Hall

WELCOME, N.C. -- Richard Childress Racing president and CEO Richard Childress was among the honorees at the 45th Induction Banquet for the North Carolina Sports Hall of Fame.

Childress, an 11-time NASCAR championship-winning team owner, including six Cup Series titles with the legendary Dale Earnhardt (1986-87, '90-'91, '93-'94), is the ninth member of the motorsports fraternity to be honored by the North Carolina Sports Hall of Fame that is now 260 members strong.

"It was a very humbling experience and an honor for me to be nominated and inducted into the North Carolina Sports Hall of Fame," Childress said. "Only in America can a kid with a dream to drive a racecar be fortunate enough to be inducted into the hall of fame of his home state.

I'd be remiss if I didn't give Dale Earnhardt a lot of credit for my induction. I also have to thank all of the longtime team members at RCR and the current team members who are keeping the RCR heritage strong. Racing is a team sport and I've been fortunate to have been able to surround myself over the years with people who are committed to success."

Burnout Challenge!

Five drivers -- Johnson, Harvick, Greg Biffle, Clint Bowyer and Kyle Busch -- will compete in the inaugural Pennzoil Burnout Challenge, which will be held at Lowe's Motor Speedway before the qualifying event for the Sprint All-Star Race. In similarly prepared Richard Petty Driving Experience cars repainted in all-star colors, drivers will have to perform a full, drag-racing style burnout between two designated points followed by 360-degree spins. The winner will earn $10,000 for his preferred charity.

Humpy Wheeler, president and general manager of the Charlotte track, sees the burnout contest as a skills challenge comparable to those surrounding other all-star events, such as the slam dunk contest in basketball or the home run derby in baseball. But drivers just seem to dig the idea of burning out in a car that's not their own.

"It's fun to do burnouts," said Biffle, a 12-time race winner on NASCAR's premier circuit. "I think I do a pretty good burnout, but it's a matter of the tire holding together, too. These cars have so much power and control that it's easy to do a burnout, but what happens is, obviously, the tire will come apart and tear the quarterpanels off the car. NASCAR doesn't like that when you're in post-race inspection and the quarterpanels are ripped off it, so you've got to be kind of careful."

No one is going to be worried about being careful Saturday night -- in fact, Bowyer even crashed while attempting a burnout during an event last month to announce the competition.

Darlington claims its victims in Friday practice

DARLINGTON, S.C. -- The recently repaved Darlington Raceway proved to be just as tough on machinery as its former incarnation. No fewer than four drivers were forced to backup cars after incidents in Friday's two practice sessions, including defending Cup champion Jimmie Johnson.

Johnson had just turned his quickest laps of the early session when he lost control of his No. 48 Chevrolet and hit the wall (watch video).

"I hit the wall in Turn 1," Johnson said. "We worked hard over the night to make some gains and we ran two of the fastest laps and unfortunately I crashed on my third.

"I'm still trying to understand why we lost it. I lost it early on the straightaway before the corner, so something happened up on the straightaway."

Johnson spun the backup car in the second session, damaging the left-front fender and splitter, but it appeared the team would be able to repair the damage in time for qualifying. Johnson said he couldn't remember crashing two cars in one day.

"Hey, we don't race until 7 p.m. [Saturday night]," Johnson said. "They can get another backup here. Maybe I can make it three."

Other teams that pulled out backups from Friday incidents included Reed Sorenson and Paul Menard. David Ragan and Robby Gordon also suffered damage during final practice crashes.

I'm still here

It's been so nice here in New Jersey, the last thing on my mind was blogging. And I still don't feel like blogging, so I'll just ask you some questions and hopefully I'll get at least one response.

1. Now that Darlington has been re-paved, do you think there will be side by side racing this weekend or will it be the same 'ol same 'ol?

2. Speeds in the straightaways are approaching 200 mph on the newly re-paved Darlington track, do you think that will produce some major pile ups or are you taking the wait and see approach?

3. Do you believe Kyle Busch's driving is similar to how Dale Sr. drove?

4. Do you think that Dale Jr. has real good chance of winning at Darlington this weekend?

It would be wonderful to hear from all my readers, but if I can't get all of you to respond, a few would be nice.
